Justices L. Victoria Gowri and N. Senthilkumar of #MadrasHighCourt order notices, returnable by June 9, to the Centre, the Bar Council of India and others on a writ petition filed by Congress Member of Parliament R. Sudha questioning the enrolment of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict A.G. Perarivalan as a lawyer. She has urged the court to declare Section 24A of the Advocates Act of 1961 as unconstitutional since it does not impose any ban on enrolment of convicts as lawyers. The MP has also sought a consequent declaration that the enrolment of Mr. Perarivalan is illegal. She has further sought for an interim order suspending the registration of Mr. Perarivalan in the rolls of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry besides insisting upon a CBI inquiry to find out the circumstances in which he was allowed to get enrolled with the Bar Council. @THChennai Backgrounder👇
