HC notice on plea to clear encroachments from temple car streets

Madurai: The Madras high court on Thursday directed the Kanyakumari district administration to respond to a plea seeking the removal of encroachments from the ratha veedhis (car streets) around the Alagamman Sametha Sundareswarar Temple in Vadiveeswaram.

A division bench of Justice Anita Sumanth and Justice C Kumarappan issued the direction while hearing a public interest litigation filed by P Kumaresan of Kanyakumari. The petitioner said the temple, an ancient shrine that draws devotees from across the state for its car festival, has four ratha veedhis that have been encroached upon by houses and shops, hindering the pulling of temple cars.
He explained that due to the encroachments on the car streets, there are difficulties in pulling the temple cars during the temple car festival. He mentioned that he submitted a representation to the authorities seeking to restore the car streets by removing the encroachments. But no action was taken, prompting him to approach the court.
