Physical functioning of subordinate courts in various districts of Tamil Nadu will continue, intimated the Registrar General of the High Court on Friday.

On a review of the situation amid the pandemic, the Administrative Committee of the High Court has decided that physical functioning of all Subordinate Courts in 28 districts of Tamil Nadu and in the UT of Puducherry may be continued.

These districts include:

Dharmapuri, The Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, Tiruvarur, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Karur, Sivagangai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Erode, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Kanniyakumari, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Salem, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, and Villupuram.

It may be noted that courts situated in Madurai will not re-open as the district is under lockdown, as per Government order dated June 22, until June 30, 2020.

The official memorandum issued to this effect states:

“The Hon’ble Administrative Committee directs to continue the functioning of subordinate Courts in 28 Districts (except Periyakulam Taluk in Theni District) in exclusion of Madurai District in the State of Tamil Nadu, and in the Union Territory of Puducherry, in the same manner until further orders, subject to any further decisions in this regard.”

It may be noted that the decision to re-open subordinate courts in 10 districts was first taken by the Administrative Committee on June 5, 2020. Thereafter the relaxation was extended to 19 more districts, including Madurai, vide circular dated June 18, 2020. However, the decision to re-open courts in Madurai was suspended until June 30, subsequent to announcement of a lockdown.

Through the latest Memorandum, the Administrative Committee has in effect maintained status quo.
