CHENNAI: Popular Front of India (PFI) has approached the Madras high court to direct the state government to release the schedule and procedure for admission to 25% free seats in schools under the Right To Education (RTE) Act for the academic year 2020-21.
As an interim relief, the organisation has also sought the court to direct the school education authorities to ensure that 25% seats meant for RTE Act quota are reserved in enlisted schools. The plea filed as a PIL is likely to be taken up for hearing in the first week of August.

According to the petitioner, RTE admissions normally begin on April 2 every year is completed on or before May 29. But due to the Covid-19 lockdown, there has been undue delay in such admissions for the academic year 2020–21, which has put eligible children and their parents to severe hardship. “Despite their economically weak position, parents are forced to look at enrolling their children in private schools under general quota as online classes have begun,” the party asserted.
