A division bench of justice Anita Sumanth and justice C Kumarappan was hearing a public interest litigation filed by A Veronica Mary.
The petitioner stated that Thirumangalam and Melur govt hospitals are located near the national highway. Patients who sustain injuries in road accidents frequently get admitted to these hospitals for treatment. While Melur govt hospital has a TAEI ward, such a ward is not established at the Thirumangalam govt hospital, though more patients get admitted to the hospital.

She stated that, as per RTI information, more than 4,000 patients who sustained injuries in road accidents got admitted to the Thirumangalam govt hospital from 2022 to May 2024. During the same period, 1,370 patients were referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai for further treatment. The patients are referred to GRH due to a lack of essential medical equipment at the Thirumangalam GH.
Though she submitted a representation to the authorities seeking to establish a TAEI ward at Thirumangalam, the same was not considered. Hence, the petitioner moved court.”
