*postpone ICAI exams after pongal holidays*
[24/12, 07:43] Sekarreporter: Today I have written letter to Tmt. Nirmala Sitharaman @nsitharaman , Hon’ble Union Minister for Corporate Affairs, urging immediate intervention to postpone / reschedule the CA Foundation Examinations scheduled on January 12, 16 & 18 by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India @theicai .
These exam dates coincide with Pongal, the most important harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, during which the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Madras High Court have declared holidays from January 11 to 19. Conducting a national-level professional examination during this period places Tamil Nadu students in severe hardship, forcing them to choose between cultural obligations and a career-defining exam.
This is not a Tamil Nadu–only issue. The same period witnesses Lohri (Punjab), Poush Parbon (West Bengal), Makar Sankranti (across several states), and Magh Bihu (North-East), harvest festivals deeply rooted in India’s cultural fabric.
A Union level institution must act with cultural sensitivity and respect for regional diversity. Ignoring such realities undermines the spirit of cooperative federalism and national integration.
Since ICAI functions under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Union Government must step in and ensure that examinations are rescheduled after Pongal holidays (post 20th January).
Students’ futures should not be pitted against their culture.
Respect diversity. Uphold federalism. Act in the interest of students.
