However, temple lands cannot be sold like that. Only in the rarest of circumstances, for the benefit of the public, after conducting an inquiry and soliciting objections and recommendations from Hindu public, can the sale be approved by the HR&CE Commissioner.
Challenging this, 90 people who were enjoying the temple land filed a case in the High Court. However, the temple administrative trustee, Sankara Subramaniam, filed a petition in the High Court to dismiss the case.
In the meantime, on May 16, 1997, the then HR&CE Commissioner, Meikanda Devan, issued a sudden order declaring the sale of Annamalai Nathar temple properties through auction as illegal and canceled it.
