*“Character is not ready-made, but is created bit by bit and day by day” – Edna Lyall*

*1)* Since the scholarship granted to me was not sufficient to meet my boarding charges and as a result I discontinued my boarding in the hostel and I was taking one meal a day in a small hotel outside the University gate. The distance between my rented house and my senior house was more than 20 kms. Therefore, I had purchased a bicycle. I used to reach his office by 7 am after having my food at 6 am. I accompanied him to the High Court in his car. I used to return his office by bus. Wherever, I did not have money, I went on foot from the High Court to my senior’s office. I never returned home till midnight. I never had the habit of postponing the matter to the next day. Resultantly, the final draft needs to take a long time and daily I left the office at midnight. I remember that one day I had left the office at 2 am.

*2)* The State filed an appeal against the acquittal When the matter was to be heard, the Counsel assisting the prosecution approached me and gave me a blank cheque saying that I was free to fill up any amount but I should ensure that the accused were convicted. I told the Counsel that I was a Public Prosecutor and not a Persecutor. The Counsel told me that the offer of payment would be known to anyone except to him and me. I told the Counsel that there was one person between him and me that, was my conscience and God. If I did anything contrary to my principles, my conscience would always prick me for the wrong that I had committed and it would perpetually torment me and cause agony for having committed such a mistake. I declined to accept the offer and argued the appeal with usual fairness. Ultimately the order of acquittal was confirmed.
