President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office, formalising the transition from outgoing CJI Bhushan R. Gavai, who retired on Sunday.

Journey From Haryana to the Supreme Court
Born on February 10, 1962, into a middle-class family in Haryana, Justice Surya Kant started his legal practice in Hisar in 1984 before shifting to Chandigarh. There, he developed a diverse practice that covered constitutional, service and civil law, and he appeared for universities, boards, corporations, banks and even the High Court.

He became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in July 2000 and earned the designation of senior advocate the following year. His judicial career began with his elevation as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. He later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 2018 until his appointment to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Since November 2024, he has been heading the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

Priorities Outlined by the New CJI
Speaking to the media ahead of taking charge, Justice Surya Kant stressed that tackling pendency would be central to his agenda. He said his immediate focus would be on working closely with High Courts to identify structural gaps that affect district and subordinate courts.

He also shared his plan to form Constitution Benches of five, seven and nine judges in the coming weeks to address long pending constitutional matters.

Strengthening Mediation and Alternative Mechanisms
Justice Surya Kant highlighted the importance of strengthening mediation across courts. He said, “Mediation will also be implemented effectively to reduce the burden of millions of cases.” He added that community mediation should be promoted to help resolve disputes between state governments and between the Centre and the states. “A conducive environment must be created for this,” he said.

On the Use of AI in the Judiciary
When asked about using artificial intelligence to ease the backlog, Justice Surya Kant noted both the potential and the limitations of the technology. He said, “It has advantages, but people also have some concerns. It can be used in procedural matters. However, everyone wants their case to be decided by a judge.”

The Scale of Pendency
As per data from the National Judicial Data Grid updated until July 21, Indian courts are currently burdened with 5.29 crore pending cases. District and subordinate courts account for 4.65 crore of these, High Courts for 63.30 lakh, and the Supreme Court for 86,742.

Justice Surya Kant steps into office with ambitious targets and a clear roadmap aimed at improving judicial efficiency across the country.
