Madras high court

CHENNAI: In a relief to an income tax assessee whose premises were raided along with that of state health minister C Vijayabaskar in April 2017, leading to the cancellation of bypoll to RK Nagar constituency, the Madras high court has stayed all recovery proceedings against the assessee.REMOVE ADS

The income tax officials, who raided the premises of R Nainar Mohammed in Chennai on April 7, 2017, in continuation of the search warrant issued in the name of state health minister C Vijayabhaskar, recovered Rs 2.94 crore from him.

However, alleging procedural violations, Nainar Mohammed filed the present petition in the high court saying the search that took place on April 7, 2017 pertained to financial year 2017-18 and the returns accounted for the entire seized cash. Therefore, the very basis of the unexplained or undisclosed income for the years 2017-18 and 2018-19 does not arise, because the income has already been shown and the assets are illustrated in the accounts.
Justice Anitha Sumanth, before whom the case came up for hearing on Friday, directed the income tax to file its reply by February 24, and added: “Let no recovery proceedings be initiated till then.” The petitioner approached the court challenging the assessment order of deputy commissioner of income tax, central circle for the year 2018-19, assessing his total income as Rs 4,52,48,500, including the amount seized at the time of search.

At the time of search on his premises, several slips apparently showing boothwise expenses pertaining to RK Nagar assembly elections were recovered. Apart from the slips and and papers totalling Rs 64 lakh, an amount of Rs 2.95 crore was also seized. Originally he had declared an income of Rs 1.49 crore.

CHENNAI: The DMK is happy to have those who believe in God in the party but some people are trying to portray the DMK as an anti-Hindu party. Their dream would not come true, said DMK president M K Stalin.REMOVE ADS

He was speaking at an anti-CAA signature campaign at Royapuram in Chennai on Friday. “Some are trying to whip up Hindu passion to defeat the DMK. It will never happen,” said Stalin, taking a dig at BJP and other political opponents. Earlier, speaking at a party functionary’s marriage, Stalin said portraying the DMK as anti-Hindu would not help increase the popularity of his opponents.

He took a dig at actor Rajinikanth and said, “For media, it is important to go behind those who come out of the gate and speak to them while leaving for film shooting. It becomes a topic for debate in all TV channels for two days,” said Stalin.
At the same time, there are several other important issues which the media is not bothered about, said Stalin.
Stalin, on Thursday, had asked the actor to rethink on his view on CAA, as the DMK chief claimed it was against the minorities, especially the Muslim community.
Royapuram being state fisheries minister D Jayakumar’s assembly constituency, Stalin raised the TNPSC scam. “Though the kingpin in the TNPSC scam, Jayakumar, has surrendered, we want a CBI probe into the scam. The government was not interested in exposing all involved in the scam,” said Stalin.

Whatever you may say, the general perception of the public is you and your party are die-hard Hindu hater’s. That’s a bitter truth also. For vote bank politics you all stoop so low. You spew venom against Hindus and Hindu traditions just to get Christian and Muslim votes. You are now worried because the Hindus have seen through your game.Krish
