The Supreme Court has imposed a Rs 5 lakh cost on the Centre for “targeted departmental vendetta” against former IRS officer Captain Pramod Kumar Bajaj, setting aside the ITAT selection proceedings tainted by bias. The court found that the authorities’ actions were marked by “rank procrastination” and “deliberate obstacles” in Bajaj’s appointment as Member (Accountant) of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). ¹ ² ³
