New Delhi, August 5: The Supreme Court today granted the State of Tamil Nadu a further period of five months to complete the exercise of identifying and classifying temples in the State as those governed by Agamic practices and those not governed by Agamic practices.
The matter came up before a Bench headed by Justice M.M. Sundresh.
Senior Advocate Valliappan, appearing for all the petitioners, pointed out that the Supreme Court had already directed the State to undertake the exercise of identifying and classifying the temples, but the process had not yet been completed. He urged the Court to fix a definite time-frame for compliance with its earlier directions.
Appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu, Advocate B.Karunakaran submitted that officials were visiting individual temples across the State and carrying out the exercise. The State, therefore, sought eight more months to complete the process.
The Supreme Court, however, declined the State’s request for eight months and granted five months to complete the exercise of identifying and classifying temples governed by Agamic practices and those not governed by Agamic practices.
At the previous hearing in March, the State had informed the Supreme Court that the exercise would be completed by August. The Court has now granted a further five months for its completion.
