The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to three accused in the 2024 Pune Porsche crash case that claimed two lives, while sharply flagging the role of parents in incidents involving juveniles, remarking that many simply “give them money, ATM card” instead of exercising control or engaging with their children.
A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan granted bail to Amar Santish Gaikwad, an alleged middleman, and Aditya Avinash Sood and Ashish Satish Mittal, parents of two other juveniles who were in the car at the time of the accident. The court noted that the three accused had been in custody for around 18 months.

During the hearing, the bench made strong observations on parental responsibility in cases involving underage substance abuse and reckless driving. “Most importantly the parents of these juveniles are responsible for handing over the car keys to the children and giving them sufficient funds to have a gala time. These parents have no time to talk to their children, have a dialogue with them and spend time with them. So what is the solution? Give them money, ATM card,” Justice Nagarathna said.

The court noted that there were no allegations against the juveniles seated in the rear of the car, and that the role attributed to Sood and Mittal related to an alleged conspiracy to replace the blood samples of their wards after the incident.
Senior advocates Siddharth Dave and Siddharth Agarwal, appearing for the parents, argued that they were not responsible for the accident. Advocate Sana Raees Khan, appearing for Gaikwad, contended that the allegation against him — that Rs 3 lakh was handed over to facilitate blood sample manipulation — was not corroborated and that no recovery was made from him.
Opposing the bail, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the family of one of the victims, argued that the case went beyond rash and negligent driving and involved a serious conspiracy at a government hospital.
Recording the submissions, the top court granted bail to all three accused and directed them to cooperate with the investigation.
The case relates to a May 19, 2024, incident in which a Porsche car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy under the influence of alcohol fatally knocked down two IT professionals in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. The Juvenile Justice Board’s initial decision to grant bail to the minor on lenient terms, including writing an essay on road safety, had triggered nationwide outrage.
