BREAKING Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan of #MadrasHighCourt ask how can cow slaughter be permitted in public places during Bakrid when such slaughter could be done only in designated places. They raise the question during the hearing of a public interest litigation petition filed by a youth wing member of Indu Makkal Katchi. The judges intend to pass detailed orders by the end of the day and say the entire onus will be put on the district administration and the police to ensure that the court order gets implemented in letter and spirt. They also recall that the High Court had passed similar orders in 2020 @THChennai BackgrounderšŸ‘‡

Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan of #MadrasHighCourt adjourn to May 29, 2026 the hearing on a case filed by temple activist T.R. Ramesh against amendment of statutory rules to permit deposit of temple funds in State owned non banking finance corporations such as Tamil Nadu Power Finance Corporation and Tamil Nadu Transport Development Finance Corporation. Senior Counsel S. Ravi, representing the petitioner, claims, the HR&CE department had deposited ₹2,700 crore of temple funds in these NBFCs over the last 10 years though their rating is the lowest. Advocate General Vijay Narayan and Additional Advocate General P.V. Balasubramaniam, representing the TN Government and TN Power Finance Corporation respectively, oppose any kind of interim order. They seek time to file detailed counter affidavits. Judges want to know by the next hearing as to whether the Tamil Nadu governnment would be willing to give a sovereign guarantee that the temple funds will be safe irrespective of the place of deposit. @THChennai BackgrounderšŸ‘‡

Government Counsel (criminal side) R. John Sathyan says it was a mistake. Justice Swaminathan now goes into the merits of the habeas corpus petition which has challenged the Goondas detention order issued by Mr. Arun. Judge says an atrocious order has been passed by the IPS officer and the court intends to make some strong observations against him. He says the court wanted to put the officer on notice before making the comments and hence he had been summoned to the court today.

Tamil Nadu’s Advocate General Vijay Narayan tells Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan of #MadrasHighCourt that the State government has decided to give top priority to safety of women and children and put in place a number of measures aimed at preventing sexual crimes against them. He says the discussions have begun and that it will take two to three weeks to come up with an action plan. The submissions are made during the hearing of a public interest litigation petition filed by a 26-year-old rape survivor seeking a direction to all trial courts in the State to complete the trial in sexual assault cases within two months, after the filing of charge sheets, as required under Section 346(1) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Petitioner says she was sexually assaulted by two cops in Tiruvannamalai in September 2025 and the charge sheet against them was filed in November 2025 but the trial is yet to commence. She also refers to yet another sexualt assault case where the trial had been delayed. Judges pass an interim direction for disposal of the petitioner’s case before July 30, 2026 and keep the main PIL petition pending for the government to come up with an action plan for speedy disposal of all sexual offence cases. @THChennai
