Madras High Court Issues Notice in PIL Concerning Political Activities in Schools

The Public Interest Litigation in W.P. No.25159 of 2026 came up for hearing today before the Hon’ble First Bench of the Madras High Court.

Appearing for the petitioner, Mr. J. Ravindran, Senior Advocate, advanced submissions on the maintainability and interim relief sought in the writ petition.

During the course of hearing, the Hon’ble Court observed that the Government Order, implementation of which was sought in the writ petition, had already been stayed by the Hon’ble High Court.

In response, the learned Senior Counsel for the petitioner circulated the interim order passed by the Hon’ble Court in W.P. Nos.14133 & 14263 of 2026, and submitted that the interim stay granted therein was confined only to the requirement relating to uploading of the annual self-declaration under Rule 35(4)(vii), and did not stay the implementation of Rule 35(4)(a), which prohibits the use of school premises for political or ideological activities.

The learned Senior Counsel further requested the Hon’ble Court to consider the interim prayer seeking a direction to the respondents to file a detailed status report regarding the alleged violations and to take appropriate action in accordance with law.

After hearing the submissions, the Hon’ble Court directed issuance of notice to the respondents. The matter will be taken up for further hearing after service of notice.
