**Madras High Court Grants Interim Stay on Renovation Works at Shri Sowriraja Perumal Temple, Thirukkannapuram**

Chennai, May 21, 2026:

The Hon’ble Division Bench of the Madras High Court comprising Hon’ble Mr. Justice G.R. Swaminathan and Hon’ble Mr. Justice V. Lakshminarayanan has granted an interim injunction restraining further renovation works being carried out at Shri Sowriraja Perumal Temple, Thirukkannapuram, Nagapattinam District.

The interim order was passed in a Public Interest Litigation filed by Shri K.
Balasubramanian, Advocate, Thoothukudi, who is the Chairman of a Trust “Heritage Conservation Society.”

When the matter was taken up for hearing, Shri S.K.Srinivasan, learned counsel appearing for the petitioner, submitted before the Hon’ble Court that several renovation and repainting works had allegedly been undertaken in a manner affecting the heritage fabric and archaeological character of the ancient temple structure.

Particular concern was raised regarding the repainting of temple walls containing historical inscriptions, which, according to the petitioner, would seriously affect and damage the Epigraphical and heritage value of the temple.

It was further submitted that mandatory approval under the Tamil Nadu Heritage Commission Act, 2012 had not been obtained for the renovation activities undertaken by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. The petitioner also pointed out that the Heritage Commission contemplated under the said Act has not been constituted till date.

Taking note of the submissions and materials placed on record, the Hon’ble Division Bench observed that a prima facie case had been made out and accordingly granted an interim injunction restraining further renovation works in the temple until 30th June 2026
