When a large number of hawkers approach a special Division Bench of Justices R. Suresh Kumar and A.D. Jagadish Chandira of #MadrasHighCourt against the court order to reduce the number of shops on the Marina beach in Chennai from 1,417 to 300, the senior judge: We suspect that the mafia which collects mamool from the hawkers is behind this litigation. If every progressive step is opposed like this, we won’t be able to leave behind a beautiful beach for posterity. We have already said Marina beach cannot become Marina bazaar. The 1,117 hawkers, who cannot be accommodated at the Marina, can be accommodated at other vending zones near the beach. They cannot insist on hawking only at the beach as a matter of right. We will pass detailed orders at a later date. @THChennai Backgrounder👇
