The Madras High Court on Tuesday rapped the Salem Municipality questioning the need to float tenders to private parties instead of running markets under their authority.

He said the leeway provided by the authorities is facilitating the exploitation of farmers who toil to sell their produce in the markets.
This case has quite a history, Murugan earlier through legal measures revoked the order issued by municipality which cancelled his lease contract as he charged Rs 100 to Rs 150 above the ceiling. It is to be noted that Rs 20 for big shops and Rs 15 for comparatively smaller shops per day was the price fixed. The case came for hearing once again as Murugan didn’t mend his ways.
The hearing was adjourned to January 20 after the bench sought response from Municipal authority.
