The Hon’ble Supreme Court today has revised the time schedule for elections to the State Bar Councils and has directed the elections to be conducted in a phased manner based on the submissions of the parties and the Bar Council of India.

[18/11, 15:10] Sekarreporter: [18/11, 15:07] Sekarreporter: The Hon’ble Supreme Court today has revised the time schedule for elections to the State Bar Councils and has directed the elections to be conducted in a phased manner based on the submissions of the parties and the Bar Council of India. 
A bench comprising of Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and Kottishwar Singh heard the matters challenging the amendment brought by the Bar Council of India to the Certificate and Place of Practice Verification Rules,2015.
While hearing the matter, in the earlier occasions, the issue of pending elections to the State Bar Councils where brought to the notice of the Hon’ble court and by virtue of an order the Hon’ble court directed the elections to be completed by 31/01/2026. However, today after hearing the arguments of the either side, based on the submissions made by the Bar Council of India, the Hon’ble court extended the timeframe till 30/04/2026 and has stipulated the election to be conducted in a phased manner and the final phase being in the month of April and the elections be conducted by 30/04/2026 for State bar councils of Kerala, Tamilnadu and Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh and Assam, which is the last phase.
Further, to ascertain individual grievances and to overlook the smooth and fair conduct of the elections, the Hon’ble court has constituted a High Powered election monitoring committee at regional levels and a supervising committee at the national levels.
With regard to the verification process which is still ongoing, the Hon’ble court had devised a mechanism to Expedite the process and further it was observed that elections will be conducted as per Chapter 3 of Bar council of India rules.
The Hon’ble court further placed its appreciation for the assistance provided by the Bar Council of India in the present matter.
