Consider Tamil repatriate’s plea for Indian citizenship: HC

Madurai: Madras high court has directed the Centre to consider and pass orders on the representation made by a man, a Tamil repatriate from Sri Lanka, seeking to grant Indian citizenship to him and his family members.

The court was hearing the petition filed in 2021 by R Thiyagavijayan, who is presently living at the Sri Lankan Tamils rehabilitation camp in Kottapattu, Trichy district. The petitioner stated that his forefathers migrated from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka during the British era to work in the tea plantation estate. He stated that he was born in Sri Lanka to an Indian-origin Tamil family.
With a one-way passport with a valid Indian visa, he reached Rameswaram in 1983 and produced all documents to show that he was a repatriate.
Though he entered India as a repatriate as per the repatriation agreement between the Indian and Sri Lankan govts, he is being treated as a refugee.
He stated that he is a repatriate to be conferred with Indian citizenship and treating him as a refugee and delaying the grant of Indian citizenship is illegal. Thiyagavijayan stated that no steps were taken to issue Indian citizenship so far. He stated that he submitted a representation in 2020 seeking to grant Indian citizenship to him and his family members; however, the same was not considered yet.
