HC seeks report on malpractices in MGNREGA

Madurai: Taking a serious view with regard to the malpractices and misappropriation of funds allotted for implementation of MGNREGA scheme, the Madras high court on Monday put forth a series of queries to the state.

The court was hearing the public interest litigation filed by M Seenivasagam, a resident of Athankaraipatti village in Madurai district. He stated that funds allotted for MGNREGA are misappropriated by the officials by issuing job cards to government employees and non-residents. Hence, the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking action against the officials.
A division bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and B Pugalendhi observed that MGNREGA is implemented with a noble objective to provide 100 days of employment for unskilled labourers in order to protect their livelihood. The judges noted that while that the works are not carried out properly in most villages. Hence, the judges directed the state government to file a report with regard to the allocation of funds under the scheme for each year since 2006. The judges also sought the kind of works carried out under this scheme and the number of works completed.
