Madurai: A man moved the Madras high court on Wednesday, seeking a direction to provide police protection for all 108 ambulance drivers and emergency medical technicians across the state until the completion of the 2026 assembly elections.

The petitioner stated that when Palaniswami was campaigning in Vellore district on Aug 18, an ambulance passed through the crowd to pick up a woman admitted at a primary health centre and take her to the Vellore govt hospital. Upon seeing the ambulance passing through the crowd during the campaign without a patient, Palaniswami warned that ‘if the ambulance disturbed the campaign next time, it would be carrying a patient when it leaves’.

He stated that when Palaniswami was campaigning in Trichy on Aug 24, AIADMK cadres vandalised a 108 ambulance and assaulted the driver. The emergency medical technician in the ambulance, who was pregnant, was in fear due to the incident. He stated that the 108 ambulance crew members were facing threats. It is the duty of the authorities to ensure the safety and security of the ambulance crew members.
He stated that he submitted a representation seeking to provide protection to all the 108 ambulance crew members. However, no action was taken. Hence, the petitioner moved court.
