A great victory for the Government in respect of 160.86 acres of Madras Race Club lands, worth ₹ 6,500 crores, resumed by the Tamil Nadu government. Today, the Supreme Court permitted the government of Tamil Nadu to proceed with the strengthening of 4 pounds dug in 160.86 acres of land, and also for the establishment of an eco Park in 118 acres of land handed over to the horticulture department by the Revenue department on 20.9.2024, after hearing the arguments of Mr Gopal Subramaniam for the petitioner. Mr Abhisheik Manu Singhvi, Mr Mukil Rothagi and Mr P. Wilson appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu. The court, however, deleted the words “any other Public projects” from the order passed by the division bench of the Madras High Court and directed that the applications be disposed of expeditiously. Earlier, the division bench of Madras High Court, while modifying the status quo order granted by the learned single judge dated 4.7.2025, who had ordered status quo against the government *permitted the government to go ahead with the strengthening of the ponds as well as to go ahead with the eco Park in 118 acres of land or proceed with any other Public projects*. The order of a single judge prevented the government from proceeding with the strengthening of 4 ponds and the Eco Park, which is planned there. Hence, the government filed an appeal, and the division bench modified the order of status quo, against which the Madras race club has filed the present appeal before the Supreme Court.
It is a case in Tamil Nadu where the lands resumed are large tracts of land, which will prevent flooding in four areas, including Velachery, Medavakkam, Alandur, and Madipakkam, during heavy rains, as four huge ponds are being dug. Therefore, these lands are required in the public interest. On the contrary, the Madras Race Club wanted it for the purposes of conducting horse races and for club activities.
