KEY ACCUSED IN 2014 SAKIR HUSSAIN ESPIONAGE SENTENCED TO 5 YRS RI BY NIA SPL COURT
New Delhi, 14th August 2025
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court has convicted and sentenced a key accused in the 2014 Sakir Hussain Espionage Case involving a conspiracy by a Pakistani national and a Sri Lankan national to carry out explosions at a US Consulate and the Israel Embassy in India.
The NIA Special Court, Chennai, has ordered a total of 5 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of ₹1,000 against Noorudeen @ Rafi @ Ismail after finding him guilty under Section 120B r/w Section 489B of IPC and Sections 16 &18 of UA(P)A.
As per the NIA Special Court’s judgement, Noorudeen has been sentenced to 2 years each of RI under two provisions and 5 years of RI under the remaining two. All sentences will run concurrently. In default of payment of fine, the accused will undergo an additional Simple Imprisonment (SI) of 6 months.
The June 2014 case (RC-01/2014/NIA/HYD) related to a conspiracy between Sri Lankan national Muhammad Sakir Hussaien and Pakistani National Amir Zubair Siddique, employed at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, to target the US Consulate in Chennai and the Israel Embassy in Bengaluru.
NIA investigations showed that Amir Zubair Siddique had arranged Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) through Noorudeen @ Rafi @ Ismail, a habitual trafficker of fake currency, in furtherance of the conspiracy.
The NIA had filed its first chargesheet against three accused on October 23, 2014, resulting in the conviction of two accused while one had turned approver. A supplementary chargesheet was filed against Noorudeen @ Rafi @ Ismail and two others on February 22, 2018.
Efforts are on to nab the absconding chargesheeted accused in the case.
