[12/24, 13:12] Vasanthakumar Advt: Madras High Court is a Chartered High Court established by virtue of Letters Patent issued by Queen Victoria on 15/08/1862.
Originally, it’s jurisdiction was encapassing throughout the Madras Presidency i e the Present day Telangana (Except Hydreabad) Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, (Except Mysore) Kerala (Except Trinvancore & Cochin) & Tamil Nadu ( Pudukottai)
After the Advent of State Re-organisation Act, 1956 the Jurisdiction of Madras High Court was restricted to the State of Tamil Nadu.
While the circumstances stood thus, in the 1963
Union Territory of Puducherry comprising 4 enclaves Viz., Puducherry & Karaikal (Tamil), Mahe (Malayalam), Yenam (Telugu), which was hitherto was a French colony was appended to India. Therefore, Madras High Court’s Jurisdiction was extended beyond TN.
If at all possible to rename, it should be High Court of TN & Puducherry. In any event, I stand for the present name : Madras High Court 🙏
