Madurai: Madras high court has directed Karur district collector to file an explanation regarding the contradictions in reports filed by him on the action taken to prevent illegal sand mining activities in Amaravathi river in the district.

A division bench of justice G R Swaminathan and justice B Pugalendhi also warned that a serious view would be taken if it was found that the reports were filed before the court recklessly.
The court was hearing suo motu proceedings initiated in 2025 to prevent illegal sand mining in Amaravathi river. In the petition, registrar (judicial) of the Madurai bench sought a direction to the authorities to prevent encroachments in Amaravathi riverbed.

A direction was sought to initiate action to prevent illegal mining/quarrying of minor minerals in the river, and penal action in respect of the illegal mining and transportation of sand and other minerals already undertaken. A direction was also sought to initiate appropriate action against the district-level officers for failure to prevent illegal mining and destruction of the riverbed.
In the report filed on Jan 21, Karur district collector stated that in 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 up to Dec 2025, as many as 191 vehicles and 31 bullock carts were seized by officials for illicit transportation of river sand and other minerals. As many as 148 criminal cases were also registered.
However, in the subsequent action taken report filed on Thursday, the collector stated that 130 vehicles were seized and 91 cases were registered.
The hearing in the case was adjourned to Feb 12.”
