Pudhu Mandapam renovation to be over by Dec, HC told
TNN / OCT 13, 2025, 05:36 IST

In 2024, a public interest litigation petition was filed by an advocate, R Manibharathi, seeking a direction to the authorities to renovate the mandapam. In July 2024, the court directed the authorities to complete the renovation as early as possible, preferably on or before Dec 31, 2024.
The temple executive officer filed a petition seeking an extension of time to comply with the order passed by the court in 2024. He said the restoration work was a heritage-sensitive project involving traditional techniques and historical materials.

The temple administration was committed to ensuring that the conservation work was done in accordance with archaeological standards and in consultation with experts to preserve the historical, religious, and cultural significance of the mandapam for future generations.
He said the temple engaged the services of skilled artisans, sculptors, and experts who are specially trained in temple architecture and traditional methods.

However, due to the limited availability of artisans and their simultaneous involvement in works related to kumbhabhishekam (consecration) at the main temple, there was an inevitable delay in mobilisation and execution. If the work was rushed solely to meet the original deadline, it could compromise the quality, authenticity, and safety.
The temple authorities, being custodians of a historical and spiritual monument, are dutybound to uphold its sanctity and structural integrity.

It is necessary to carry out the work in a structured, stage-by-stage manner, which will help preserve its archaeological value, he said. Due to the nature of the work and processes involved, work could not be completed before the deadline of Dec 31, 2024. The temple authorities have taken steps to implement the court’s directions and the delay was due to bona fide reasons. The work would be completed by Dec 31, 2025, he said, and sought time to comply with the court’s directions.
Taking cognisance of the submissions, a division bench of Justice Anita Sumanth and Justice C Kumarappan directed the authorities to file a status report on the progress made in the renovation work of Pudhu Mandapam. The matter was posted on Nov 7.
