DMK MP Wilson urges PM to reconsider decision on rejecting Hosur airport proposal and uphold federalism

Chennai, Jan 18 (UNI) Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to discriminate Tamil Nadu as the
State deserves justice, DMK Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson on Sunday evening said denying the
government’s Hosur international airport proposal was not about policy consistency and reflected
prejudice and an imbalance in development priorities and demanded him to reconsider the decision
and uphold federal principles and inclusive development.

In a lengthy social media post, Mr Wilson, serving his second term in the Upper House of Parliament,
said the Centre has rejected the proposal without meaningful consultation and alleged that Tamil Nadu
has been consistently neglected in the aviation sector.

The reason cited for rejectithe TN’s Hosur airport proposal was due to an illegal agreement between
Bangalore International Airport Limited and the Ministry of Civil Aviation that bars any new airport within
150 km of Bengaluru, which sacrifices the rights of the State of Tamil Nadu, besides raising serious
constitutional and public-interest concerns, he said.

Mr Wilson noted that uch a concession agreement is void ab initio when it operates against public interest
and undermines the fundamental right to development and free movement.

He said infrastructure was the must to serve the people and the nation and not to protect private
commercial interests at the cost of regional equity and public growth.

“I urge the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India @narendramodi to reconsider this decision immediately
and uphold the principles of fairness, federalism, and inclusive development”, he wrote.

“Hosur deserves its airport…Tamil Nadu deserves justice…Don’t discriminate against Tamil Nadu.

The Union Government has once again rejected the Tamil Nadu Government’s proposal to establish
an airport in Hosur, without meaningful consultation, a convincing justification, or regard for the
legitimate aspirations of the people and economy of Tamil Nadu, Mr Wilson said.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has clearly announced on the floor of the Assembly the State’s commitment
to establish the Hosur International Airport, Mr Wilson said, adding, this is not a casual demand but a
strategic development vision.

“Hosur is a major industrial and export hub. It is growing rapidly, generating employment, and attracting
investment across sectors”, he noted.

“An airport here will significantly improve connectivity, boost trade, and ease the mounting pressure on
Bengaluru’s already overburdened airspace”, the DMK MP said, adding, “the reason now cited for rejection
is an illegal agreement between Bangalore International Airport Limited and the Ministry of Civil Aviation that
bars any new airport within 150 km of Bengaluru, which sacrifices the rights of the State of Tamil Nadu.”

“This raises serious constitutional and public-interest concerns. I have already written to the Civil Aviation
Minister and raised this issue in Parliament, questioning how the Union Government can enter into such
commercial arrangements with private entities that sacrifice the rights of Tamil Nadu and its people without
their consent.

Such a concession agreement is void ab initio when it operates against public interest and undermines the
fundamental right to development and free movement, he added.

“The double standards @MoCA_GoI plays are glaring. The same agreement conveniently exempts Mysuru
and Hassan. Why should Tamil Nadu be denied equal treatment? Why are the same yardsticks not applied
to Hosur? The Hon’ble Union Minister @RamMNK has no answer to this discrimination and injustice to
Tamil Nadu”, Mr Wilson asked.

“The denial of Hosur airport on the premises of barring a new airport within 150 km of Bengaluru Airport is
not based on any genuine reasons. Noida International Airport is being developed barely 90 km from Delhi’s
IGI Airport. London operates efficiently with six airports: Heathrow, City, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and
Southend. New York thrives with JFK, Newark and LaGuardia. Globally, multiple airports around major
cities are seen as essential infrastructure, not a threat”, he pointed out.

“Denying Hosur an airport is not about policy consistency. It reflects prejudice and an imbalance in
development priorities. Tamil Nadu is consistently neglected in the aviation sector. Infrastructure must
serve the people and the nation, not protect private commercial interests at the cost of regional equity
and public growth”, Mr wilson said.

“I urge the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India @narendramodi to reconsider this decision immediately and
uphold the principles of fairness, federalism, and inclusive development. Hosur deserves its airport.
Tamil Nadu deserves justice. Don’t discriminate against Tamil Nadu.#HosurAirport”, he added.
