Mhc advt Vasanthakumar : DR.M.G.R. AND MYSELF – ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP by Sekar Reporter · December 24, 2019 [12/23, 10:28] Vasanthakumar Advt: DR.M.G.R. AND MYSELF – ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP Dr. M.G.R, was a person, who needs no introduction, a matinee idol in the Tamil film industry for over four decades. His first foray into public life was 1967 when he won the first election as M.L.A. (Alandur) in the year 1967 as a D.M.K. candidate. Circumstances forced him to float separate political party viz. A.D.M.K. in the year 1972 and within a short period, his party candidate viz. K.Maya Thevar won from Dingugal Parliamentary constituency. His success in public life started with glorious victory in the State Assembly conducted in the year 1977 and his party won with thumping majority and he was unanimously elected as Chief Minister of the State. Since then, until his last breath, he ruled this State consecutively for three terms as Chief Minister. Unfortunately, during the second tenure as Chief Minister, he was diagnosed for kidney related issues, which led him to undergo treatment at Brooklin, USA, and his second term ended while he was admitted as inpatient in the hospital. In the year 1985, his party field candidates for the State Assembly and bagged comfortable seats to form independent Government, without his presence in the election campaign, he secured a resounding victory and sworn-in as Chief Minister with absolute majority. His devastating death in 1987 created a vacuum and in order to appraise the posterity about his life, a Memorial is absolutely required to honour and cement this great man in the History. Dr.M.G.R., living upto the fond title “Idhyakani” (conferred by his mentor Dr.C.N.A.) who had expressed during his life that his official residence at No. 27, Arcot Mudali Street, T.Nagar, Chennai – 600 017, should be converted into a Memorial as he did not wish public funds to be spent on his behalf. The D.M.K. Government in 2000 sought the articles from Dr.M.G.R.’s house to institute a Museum at his Memorial, in his honour vide letter issued by Department of Tamil Development. Despite receiving the articles from the relatives of Dr.M.G.R., the then Govt. did not inaugurate the museum at Marina. So, on the request made by the family members of our beloved Dr.M.G.R., myself filed a Writ Petition in W.P.No. 10066 of 2007 before the Madras High Court (the first independent brief in my profession). The Petition was for a Mandamus to the Secretary, Dept. of Tamil as it was then, to inaugurate the Museum within a time frame. Within four weeks of filing the Writ Petition, the then Govt. came forward to inaugurate the Museum, therefore, recording the decision of the Govt. the High Court was pleased to dispose of the Writ Petition. I was honoured for having appeared for the cause of inaugurating Dr.MGR’s museum at Marina by permitting me to take a photograph in his official room at the T.Nagar Memorial, which privilege was not amenable to the public. Dr.M.G.R’s 31st death anniversary falls on tomorrow (24/12/2018) [12/24, 10:43] Sekarreporter 1: 👍
