MADURAI: The Madras high court has sought a response from the state government on a plea seeking to construct a foot overbridge across the surplus water channel at Sengulam village in Virudhunagar district.
S Karuppaiah, a resident of Madurai district, in his petition stated that there are nearly 50 families belonging to the scheduled caste families residing near the eastern side of the irrigation tank at the at Sengulam village in Aruppukottai taluk.
Since a surplus water channel is situated near the residential area and when the tank is full, water flows through the surplus channel. During the rainy season when the water flows across the surplus water channel, people in the area face difficulty to cross the area.

Though the residents of the area have submitted several representations to the authorities concerned to construct a foot overbridge there, no steps were taken in this regard so far.
Hence, the petitioner moved the high court Madurai bench seeking for a direction. Hearing the plea, a division bench of justice M Duraiswamy and justice T Ravindran sought a response from the state government and adjourned the case to a further date for hearing.
