Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Saturday launched a book titled “Judiciary, Judges and the Administration of Justice” authored by retired Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice R Banumathi, in a virtual book release event.

Justices DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Justice DN Patel delivered their special addresses at the event.

The book, which is divided into four parts, elaborates on themes such as ‘independence of judiciary’, ‘judicial accountability’, ‘honesty and integrity’, ‘judicial ethics’, ‘impartiality and conscious objectivity’ and ‘probity of conduct’ required of the judges.

The central theme which dominated all of the addresses delivered on Saturday afternoon was the vast experience of over three decades in judicial service that Justice Banumathi has to her credit.

This book is a culmination of this experience which she has penned for posterity, the Judges at the book launch unanimously expressed.

CJI Bobde pointed out that Justice Banumathi joined the judicial services at a very young age and has had experience serving as a Judge right from the District Judicary all the way to the Apex Court. He said,

“I highlighted her judicial career to point out the wealth of experience she has acquired. Some people have the same experience for 20 years which is hardly any experience but Justice Banumathi’s experience is diverse and she has learnt something new at every stage.”
Justice Ramana underscored that Justice Banumathi’s experience ranged across a spectrum of legal subjects, in both civil and criminal laws.

Justice Chandrachud said that with Justice Banumathi being familiar with the nitty-gritty of the judicial system on account of having experience as a Trial Judge also, the book is where she captures all this rich experience.

Justice Indu Malhotra said that Justice Banumathi draws from her experience as a district judge and her elevation in the chapter on Judicial ethics in her book.

The book released yesterday is not the first book written by Justice Banumathi, Justice Malhotra told the gathering. Justice Banumathi had penned another book during her time as a Judge at the Madras High Court.

But latest book, released shortly after Justice Banumathi demitted office as a Judge of the Supreme Court, cannot be said to be a “post-retirement” project. The work on this book had been going on from much earlier, Justice Chandrachud said.

The book also covers extensively the e-Courts project and initiatives taken by the e-committee. Justice DN Patel highlighted that this aspect has been lucidly covered by Justice Banumathi.

All the Judges who delivered their addresses and others in attendance congratulated Justice Banumathi for this book’s release.

Justice Banumathi in her vote of thanks said that she hopes and wishes that members of the legal and judicial fraternity will read her book and also contribute towards enhancing the institution.

The Welcome address at the event was delivered by Gowshishankar Natesan of the Newgen KnowledgeWorks.
