Madurai: Madras high court has directed the Rameswaram municipal commissioner to appear before the court for failing to comply with an earlier order on a plea seeking a direction to the authorities to prevent the discharge of sewage into Agni Theertham in Rameswaram.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by ‘Elephant’ G Rajendran. The petitioner stated that Agni Theertham, abutting the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, gets polluted since sewage water from the municipality is let out into the sea near the theertham.
A division bench of justice M S Ramesh and justice A D Maria Clete observed that in spite of their specific direction to the commissioner to file an affidavit on this matter, standing counsel sought further time to file the affidavit.

“We are not happy with the manner in which very serious allegations made against the municipality have been dealt with. We have also taken into account the photographs produced before us, which may substantiate the averments made in this public interest litigation that sewage water is being let out into the ocean and the sorry state of affairs to regulate such release of the effluents,” the judges observed.
Hence, the judges directed the municipal commissioner to be physically present before the court on Dec 2, along with an affidavit regarding the various steps taken over these years for regulating the flow of sewage water into the ocean.
