“Madurai: Madras high court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to renovate and reconstitute Karaikudi Kanadukathan airport in Sivaganga district.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Shiva VR of Trichy district.
The petitioner stated that the Chettinad airport, also known as Karaikudi Kanadukathan airport, was abandoned. The airport could serve the people of Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar districts. The airport would pave the way to boost business and tourism.
He stated that he submitted a representation to the Union ministry of civil aviation seeking to renovate and reconstitute the airport.
Since the same is yet to be considered, the petitioner moved court.
A division bench of justice M S Ramesh and justice A D Maria Clete observed that when no in-principle administrative decision was taken by the govt to reopen the Karaikudi airport, the question of renovating and reconstituting the airport would not arise. The representation by the petitioner does not deserve consideration. Hence, directing the officials to consider the representation is not warranted, the judges observed and dismissed the petition.
