‘The Last Crusade of Kalaignar’ is the English translation of the blockbuster book — Kalaignarin Kadaisi Yuddham — dealing with how DMK won a Marina Beach space for its patriarch Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in 2018. After the AIADMK government refused permission to lay Kalaignar to rest next to his mentor Anna’s memorial on the Marina Promenade, the DMK took the issue to court and won an order directing Tamil Nadu government to allot Marina burial space for Kalaignar.
The original book in Tamil,
penned by journalist D. Rameshkumar, narrated how Kalaignar’s death shook the DMK, and how the party was further rattled by the AIADMK government’s refusal to allot a burial slot on the Marina Beach despite personal efforts by M.K. Stalin. The DMK then took an unprecedented route of approaching Madras High court to win a final battle for the sake of its leader Kalaignar.
The book narrates how the case was instituted, how the government contested it and how many twists and turns it took before finally the Madras High court ordered the state government to allot the land on tr Marina forthwith. All these happened while Kalaignar’s mortal remains had been kept for public homage and lakhs of emotional cadres were flooding Chennai to offer tributes to their leader. The gripping story of Kalaignar’s final crusade has now been translated and was released by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday.
