The central government today through its ASG Mr Sankaranarayanan said before the High court that granting of 10% reservations for students studying in government Puducherry schools is illegal and that it has rejected the Puducherry cabinet recommendation to have 10% reservations to students on line TN 7.5% reservations.

Strongly opposing such rejection, Mr P. Wilson appearing for petitioner submitted that the central government stand sounds death knell to welfare of all students studying in government schools who are eligible to 7.5% reservations in Tamilnadu also .

He said central government stand is against legislative power of a state under List III and is against constitutional bench decision of judgment of Supreme Court which has approved such inservice-reservations . He said power to grant inservice reservations is permitted for a state in the interest of welfare of the students and the central government cannot term it as illegal .
He said decision of central government is unfortunate and runs against concept of social justice and judgment of Supreme Court .
Hon’ble Mr Justice Pugalenthi posted the matter for hearing of Writ Petition to first week of April.
