Supreme Court decides against regular court hearings

New Delhi: A seven-judge committee of the Supreme Court has decided against resuming regular open court hearings in view of the serious situation on the pandemic front.

“The committee, headed by Supreme Court judge, justice NV Ramana, met on Monday and decided that courts cannot be opened for regular hearings. This is a serious situation and infection is spreading and chances cannot be taken,” a person with direct knowledge of the matter told ET.

The committee will meet by this month-end and decide on the further course of action after seeking expert opinion. “Yes, we met yesterday (Monday) but will take a call by end June.

There is no question of opening up. But how to open up? In any case, we have vacations till July…will see after that,” a Supreme Court judge told ET.

Some judges ET spoke to said they were extremely sympathetic towards lawyers who are not well off. “Yes, it is very difficult for them, but these are challenging times,” said one of the judges.
