Salem corridor: DMK slams Centre for seeking early hearing

CHENNAI: DMK chief MK Stalin on Saturday condemned the Union government for moving a petition before the Supreme Court, seeking an early hearing of its appeal challenging the Madras high court’s order on Chennai Salem greenfield corridor. A section of farmers in Tiruvannamalai and Seerkadu in Kuppanur panchayat in Salem district are staging protests against the Centre’s move for the last two days.
The appeal filed by the national highways authority of India was scheduled for hearing in March, but it could not be taken up due to the pandemic. Stalin said the Centre should have focused on prevention of the virus spread, recovery of economy that has been hit by the prolonged lockdown and restoration of the livelihood of people. “Showing haste in implementing greenfield corridor project, which is being opposed by the locals, causes anguish and shock,” the DMK leader said. Environment minister K C Karupannan’s statement endorsing the project smacks of arrogance, Stalin said.
