CHENNAI: Loktantrik Janata Dal’s Kerala unit has approached the Madras high court seeking a CBI probe into all ’14 suicides’ reported at IIT-Madras since 2006.
“So far 14 students, including five from Andhra Pradesh, tree from Kerala and two from Tamil Nadu, two from Uttar Pradesh and one each from Puducherry and Jharkhand have reportedly committed suicide in the institution since 2006 as they faced discrimination on the basis of religion, caste and language. But so far, the head of the institution has not taken any steps to ascertain the reason for the suicides,” Saleem Madavoor, national president of the party’s Yuva Janathadal said.

The recent case is that of Fathima Latheef, who committed suicide due to religious discrimination at the hands of some faculty members, he added.
Though such suicides had been reported from 2006, neither the Tamil Nadu government nor the local police had conducted any fruitful inquiry to bring out the reasons behind such deaths.

This apart, the persons alleged to be abetting such suicides were in high influential positions, which demanded a probe by an independent agency, he added.
The petitioner wanted the court to interfere and order a CBI probe into all the 14 suicides on the basis of a representation given by him on November 23.
The PIL is likely to be taken up for hearing on Monday.
