CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Wednesday permitted private schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu to collect 35% of the annual fee for the academic year 2020-21.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh passed the order after taking judicial notice of the fact that physical classes are not going resume till the end of 2020.
The court has granted time till February 28, 2021 to pay the 35% fee. The court has also granted liberty to the institutions to collect this 35% in instalments by issuing an appropriate circular.

The interim order was passed on a batch of pleas moved by the private educational institutions challenging the state government’s order restraining the them from demanding fee during lockdown.
On July 17, the court allowed them to collect an ‘advance’ fee of 40% from students before August 31 as an interim measure. Later, the last date for payment of 40% fee was extended till September 30.
This apart, the court has also directed the authorities to conduct inquiries and initiate appropriate action against institutions that were alleged to have demanded payment of full fee in violation of court order.
