Justices MM Sundresh and S Ananthi, however, noted that in the interest of judicial restraint, it cannot order the Central government to carry out this measure. Nevertheless, the Bench acknowledged that it is a proposal worth considering, given Bose’s unparalleled contributions to the Indian freedom movement “We need not say anything on the greatness of Netaji, apart from the contribution made, which starts from his resignation from the coveted post to the creation of Indian National Army. His contribution towards the Indian Freedom movement is unparallel.

In view of the great contributions made by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to the country’s freedom movement, the Madras High Court recently directed the Central Government to consider a representation made by a petitioner to print the image of the freedom fighter on Indian currency (KK Ramesh v. The State Union of India and ors).

The Bench of Justices MM Sundresh and S Ananthi, however, noted that in the interest of judicial restraint, it cannot order the Central government to carry out this measure.

Nevertheless, the Bench acknowledged that it is a proposal worth considering, given Bose’s unparalleled contributions to the Indian freedom movement

We need not say anything on the greatness of Netaji, apart from the contribution made, which starts from his resignation from the coveted post to the creation of Indian National Army. His contribution towards the Indian Freedom movement is unparallel.

Though we are of the view that prayer as sought for cannot be granted, one cannot ignore the great sacrifice made by the great leader and the persons, who served along with him. History of the nation will have to be told and retold again and again for the posterity to remember,” the order passed by Court said.

The petitioner, KK Ramesh, appearing in-person had urged printing of Bose’s image in currency so that the younger generations understand and appreciate his services in securing the independence of India.

A representation on the issue had also been sent by the petitioner to the government on January 20, the Court was told. The Court urged the Central government authorities and the Reserve Bank of India to consider the petitioner’s request, while disposing of the matter.
