MADURAI: The CBI probing the Sathankulam custodial deaths cases on Tuesday informed the Madras high court that 17 injuries were found on the body of P Jeyaraj while 13 injuries were found on the body of his son, J Beniks, as per the postmortem report.
The court was hearing the bail petitions filed by three suspended policemen — head constables S Murugan and X Thomas Francis and constable Muthuraj — who were among 10 cops arrested in connection with the custodial deaths of the father-son duo in Tuticorin district.
A CBI official informed the court that as per the postmortem report, the cause of death of the father-son duo was the blunt injuries they had sustained. He submitted that the CBI had examined 38 witnesses thus far and the investigation was under way.
He also submitted that as per the statement of two women head constables attached to the Sathankulam police station, Murugan, Muthuraj and Thomas Francis had beaten up the duo.
Jeyaraj’s wife, Selvarani, also filed an intervening petition. The counsel appearing for Selvarani objected to the grant of bail stating that if the petitioners were released on bail, there was the possibility that they might tamper with the witnesses of the case.
After elaborately hearing the arguments, Justice V Bharathidasan observed that the court could not grant bail to the petitioners during this stage of investigation.
Since, the counsel appearing for the petitioners sought permission to withdraw the petitions, the judge dismissed them as withdrawn.
