CHENNAI: In a reprieve to former Union ministers T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran who apprehended arrest in a case registered against them under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, the Madras high court on Saturday directed police not to take any coercive action till May 29.

The judge passed the interim orders in the urgent petitions moved by the top DMK leaders following the arrest of Rajya Sabha member and party organisation secretary R S Bharathi.
While Bharathi got a reprieve from the principal sessions court in Chennai which granted him interim bail till June 1, Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran approached the high court.
Maran came under fire for his “inappropriate” remarks during a press meet after meeting the chief secretary of Tamil Nadu. His remarks were deemed inappropriate and degrading members of certain communities.

On May 13, Maran and Baalu met chief secretary K Shanmugam to submit representations received from people. They later told the media that the official had humiliated the delegation and treated them like oppressed citizens.
Several complaints have been lodged against the former Union ministers at several districts and FIRs too have been registered.
Apprehending arrest in connection with the incident, Maran and Baalu approached the high court seeking to enlarge him on bail in the event of arrest.
Acceding to a request for urgent hearing made by senior counsels P Wilson, N R Elango and A R L Sundresan, Justice Nirmal Kumar agreed to hear the bail applications in urgent basis.

Passing the interim order, the court refused to allow request made by state public prosecutor A Natarajan to observe that police can attest the petitioners in other pending FIRs.
