Madurai: Madras high court has sought the state government’s response on a plea seeking erection of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi’s statue in Madurai. In his petition, G Thalapathi, DMK district secretary, stated that Karunanidhi had served as CM for five terms between 1969 and 2001 and held the office of the state chief minister for 6,863 days, the longest in the state. He has won all the elections he contested.

After Karunanidhi died on August 7, 2018 aged 94, his party functionaries decided to erect a statue for him at Madurai. He stated that installing his statue would not only be a matter of pride for the party but also for the city as it will amount to honouring a person who had dedicated his life to the literary world and politics.

He had sent a representation to the authorities concerned seeking permission to erect a statue in Madurai on September 3, 2018 and a reminder letter too dated December 6. However, no steps were taken by the officials in this regard.

Even as his representation to erect the statue is pending for nearly 15 months, the authorities have permitted to erect a statue of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa at K K Nagar. When the petition was heard on Monday, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana sought response from the state government and adjourned the case to January 2 for further hearing.
